Saudi Arabia is pressurizing Pakistan to attack Iran and reminding it of the 2025 defense agreement. In a televised message sent to Canada through Saudi experts, Riyadh indicated that it expected action from Islamabad in view of rising tensions in West Asia.
Saudi Arabia seems to be relying on Pakistan’s experienced army after the challenges faced in continuing ground operations in Yemen. It is said that with this defense agreement, Riyadh will benefit from Pakistan’s nuclear deterrence capability, which will reduce its dependence on America. Apart from this, he will be in a strong position against Iran.
Why can’t Pakistan attack Iran?
Pakistan may have to take serious risks in any conflict with Iran. An attack on Shia-dominated Iran could give rise to communal unrest in the country. Pakistan has the second largest Shia population in the world, estimated to number between 30 and 50 million. Apart from this, war can make poor Pakistan even weaker than before. Rising oil prices, reduced remittances from Gulf countries and the already stressed financial situation could deepen the crisis.
In fact, Pakistan shares a 900 km long border with Iran, which increases the risk of retaliation. He is already dealing with tensions related to terrorists and Baloch insurgents in Afghanistan. Any new conflict can cause the Pakistani Army to fail on many fronts.
Pakistan has remained neutral till now
Indian intelligence sources say that even a limited role by Pakistan such as air defense support or deployment to Saudi Arabia or the Strait of Hormuz would effectively open up the western front. This is happening at a time when Pakistan is already facing many security challenges. Going to war against Iran, which has a Shia population, could also increase domestic unrest and radicalism.
Sources believe that Pakistan is unlikely to launch a full-scale invasion of Iran or send ground troops. Islamabad’s recent statements are being seen as a warning aimed at maintaining balance rather than war. Pakistan has so far maintained neutrality in the US-Israel-Iran conflict.
