Amidst the changing picture of society and increasing distance in relationships, the Telangana government has taken a decision which is a unique combination of human sensitivities and legal strictness. In today’s era, when many children are busy in their own world leaving their elderly parents destitute, then the government has decided to directly hit their salaries. This law is a tough lesson for those people who learned to walk holding the fingers of their loved ones, but when the time came, they left those hands. But now those who do this are not well off.
Historic decision of Telangana cabinet
Chief Minister A. The ‘Parents Assistance Bill’ has been approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Revanth Reddy. The direct objective of this law is to provide social and economic security to the elderly who have been abandoned by their children. The government has made it clear that now neglect of the elderly will not be considered just a family matter but a legal offence. This step has been taken in view of the increasing number of old age homes and elderly people struggling with loneliness in the state.
Strict rules for deduction from salary
Under this new law, a provision has been made that if an employee does not take care of his elderly parents, the government will deduct 15 percent or a maximum of Rs 10,000 (whichever is less) from his salary. This amount will be deposited directly into the bank account of those parents who have filed the complaint. This step of the government will not only provide financial assistance, but is also a big warning for those people who have started considering their elders as a burden.

Private and public sectors within the ambit of law
This decision of Telangana government is shocking and bold because only government employees are not included in it. Now private sector employees and elected public representatives will also come under the purview of this law. The state cabinet believes that the duty of serving the elderly is not only of those doing government jobs, but of every section of the society. Even for the youth working in private companies, ignoring their elders can prove costly.
The purpose of the law and the expectations of the elderly
The main goal of this law is not just to free the pockets of children, but to make them realize that respecting elders is not a favor but a responsibility. It is often seen that despite being financially prosperous, children force their parents to live in poverty and loneliness. Now with the implementation of this new bill, at least the elderly will not have to face financial crisis and they will be able to live the rest of their lives with respect.
