The instruction to ban the recitation of Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta was reportedly given by Rajshahi-1 (Tanor-Godagari) MP Professor Mujibur Rahman and Naib-e-Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami during an event organized in Tanor Upazila on March 26, the 56th Independence Day of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance expressed protest
Bangladesh Rashtriya Hindu Grand Alliance (Central Executive Committee) expressed anger and strongly condemned this matter. Throughout Bangladesh, there is a tradition of starting such events with the recitation of religious texts in state programs held on the occasion of Independence Day and National Day. Along with the recitation of the Quran, excerpts from Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta are also traditionally recited on this day.
However, MP Mujibur Rahman (Rajshahi-1: Tanor-Godagari) and Naib-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami reportedly directed not to recite Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta. This action has been strongly condemned and protests are being held at various places.
sought clarification from officials
In a statement sent to the media on Friday morning, the organization led by Dr. Mrityunjay Kumar Roy (Dr. M.K. Roy), General Secretary of Bangladesh Rashtriya Hindu Grand Alliance, raised questions as to how such a direction could be given in an important state program. He has sought clarification on this from the state officials. It was told that this instruction was given to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Tanor. However, due to the efforts of UNO Naima Khan, the program was successfully completed, which also included the recitation of Geeta. The organization has expressed its heartfelt gratitude to UNO Naima Khan.
The organization has drawn the attention of the concerned government officials to this and demanded accountability from the elected representatives for such discriminatory and communal behavior. He has also called upon the central leadership of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami to take appropriate action.
