In view of the shortage of commercial LPG in the country’s capital Delhi, the government has implemented a new system. Now gas cylinders will be distributed on the basis of average consumption, so that those who need it the most can get gas first. The government says that with this decision the supply system will be more balanced and sudden shortage in the market will also be prevented.

The government has also laid emphasis on increasing the availability of gas. Earlier only about 20 percent gas was reaching the market, now it has been increased to about 50 percent. This means that the supply is now more than double as compared to earlier.

According to the data, earlier about 1800 cylinders were being available daily, now this number has increased to 4500. This is expected to provide relief to hotels, restaurants and small businessmen, who were suffering from gas shortage for some time.

Gas to essential services first

In the new system, the government has made it clear that essential services will be given gas first. This includes places like schools, hospitals, bus stands, railway stations and airports.

The government believes that there should not be any kind of obstruction at these places, because they are directly related to the lives of common people. Therefore, the needs of these institutions have been kept on priority.

225 cylinders i.e. 5 percent share has been fixed for these services. Similarly, 225 cylinders (5 percent) are also being given to government institutions, PSUs, industrial canteens and community kitchens.

Hotel business also in focus

In the distribution of gas, the maximum share has been given to hotels, restaurants, dhabas and food related businesses. The reason for this is that they are directly related to people’s food.

If there is a shortage of gas in these sectors, it will immediately affect the general public. For this reason, the government has kept them on priority, so that the food system in the city remains smooth.

3,375 cylinders i.e. 75 percent of the total supply are being given in this sector. Apart from this, 225 cylinders (5 percent) have been earmarked for catering and banquet services.

separate arrangement for laborers

Migrant laborers have also been kept in special consideration in the new policy. Separate arrangements for small cylinders have been made for them, so that they can get gas at lower cost.

The government believes that the working class is most affected because both their daily work and food depend on gas. Therefore, a separate quota has been fixed for them, so that they can get relief.

684 small cylinders of 5 kg each, i.e. 4 percent of the total supply, have been separately ensured for the migrant laborers, so that they do not face any kind of problem.

Many reasons behind the shortage

The shortage of commercial gas in Delhi has not happened suddenly. There are many reasons behind this. Fluctuations in gas prices in the international market, problems in the supply chain and increased demand during festivals and wedding seasons had made this problem more serious. This was the reason why gas shortage was clearly visible in the market in the last few weeks.

The government says that after the implementation of the new system, the situation is improving rapidly. According to officials, the supply is now getting better than before and the situation may become completely normal in the coming days.

Delhi government minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has also said that the increased supply is being implemented rapidly, so that essential services and business are not affected.

strictness on black marketing

Stopping black marketing and hoarding amid gas shortage was also a big challenge for the government. In view of this, about 70 teams have been fielded, which are continuously monitoring. The government has made it clear that strict action will be taken against whoever breaks the rules.

Effect of central government’s decision

The role of the central government is also said to be important in this entire system. According to the minister, this decision taken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come at the right time, which has brought relief to lakhs of people. Traders, laborers and people associated with the service sector will directly benefit from this.

The government has appealed to the people to ignore rumors and use gas only as per need. If everyone acts wisely, then the gas supply can be kept balanced and no one will have to face any problem.

Overall, this new policy is an attempt to strike a balance between the shortage of gas, so that essential services continue to operate and gas reaches every needy on time.
