Amidst the ongoing conflict and tension in the Middle East, Iran has claimed to have shot down an American AWACS aircraft at Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base. Iran’s state news agency IRNA shared pictures before and after the downing of the aircraft in a post on social media platform X on Sunday (March 29, 2026). Apart from this, in another picture the rear part of the AWACS aircraft is seen completely broken.
Iran’s government news agency IRNA wrote in its post, ‘The pictures released after the destruction of America’s AWACS aircraft clearly show that contrary to the alleged claims made by the Americans, their air defense systems are not even capable of protecting their most important military resources.’

A day earlier Iran had claimed to have shot down American F-16
On Saturday (March 28, 2026), a day before the claim of destroying the American AWACS aircraft at Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had claimed to have shot down an F-16 fighter plane of the US Air Force. IRGC said that Iran has shot down another American F-16 fighter plane in the battlefield.
However, America’s Central Command CENTCOM has completely rejected the claim made by Iran’s army and termed it as a lie. Centcom said that Iran has not shot down any American fighter plane on the battlefield.
Iran has earlier also made claims regarding US and Israeli fighter planes
After the war in the Middle East with America and Israel that started on February 28, 2026, Iran has claimed to have shot down American and Israeli planes several times. According to the report of Far News, Iran claimed on March 22, 2026 that an American F-15 fighter plane was targeted by surface-to-air missiles of the Iranian Air Defense Force on the country’s southern coast near the Strait of Hormuz.
Apart from this, Iran claimed to have shot down America’s advanced fifth generation F-35 fighter aircraft, F-16 fighter aircraft and also destroyed the American THAAD radar system. However, the US Central Command CENTCOM is completely rejecting any claim of Iran causing harm to America and is calling all Iran’s claims false.
