These days, Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is being shaken by painful incidents of crime one after the other. Three separate incidents that occurred in the month of March have raised serious questions on the law and order situation of the city. Murder of wife for dowry, murder with a shovel in hostel and shooting of a retired Brigadier while out on morning walk – each incident is exposing a different disease of the society.
There is no peace even within the walls of the house – dowry murder case
On March 3, a painful news came from Nehru Colony police station area. Shahbaz, who worked in a government lab, murdered his wife Kahkashan by smothering her face with a blanket. After marriage, there was only one demand in the house – Rs 50 lakh and a plot. Kahkashan’s family could not fulfill this demand, after which accused Shahbaz killed his wife. The police registered a case not only against the husband but also against the father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law. The whole house became accused. This case is a reminder of the kind of domestic violence that often remains suppressed within four walls.
Murder with a shovel – BTech student Divyanshu
On March 24, another heart-wrenching news came from Premnagar police station area. Divyanshu Jatrana, a 22-year-old BTech student from Muzaffarnagar, was murdered. The matter escalated so much that someone picked up a shovel and hit him on the head. Police caught three students but seven are still absconding. SSP Dehradun has announced a reward of Rs 25-25 thousand on all seven and non-bailable warrants have been issued. Divyanshu’s parents are still waiting for complete justice at his home in Muzaffarnagar.
Retired Brigadier shot while out on morning walk – This morning
And then today, March 30, 2026. It was around quarter to seven in the morning. Retired Brigadier VK Joshi, resident of Johri village, had gone out for a morning walk. There was an altercation over the right of way between a Delhi numbered Fortuner and a Scorpio near Malsi on Mussoorie Road. The conversation escalated and shots were fired. The bullet hit Brigadier VK Joshi who was out on a morning walk. He was taken to the hospital but did not survive. The man who protected the country’s borders was killed in a car accident on the streets of his own city.
What is happening in Dehradun?
Looking at these incidents together, one thing becomes clear that none of them is an isolated exception. The poison of dowry, increasing aggression among youth and road rage on the streets – each incident exposes a different disease of the society. And the most worrying thing is that these incidents are happening in broad daylight and in crowded places where the criminals themselves have no fear of being caught.
