Due to education, career, financial independence and freedom to take one’s own decisions, many women are taking the decision of becoming a mother later than before. Whereas earlier marriage at an early age and early pregnancy were common, now women think of becoming a mother even after the age of 30 or 35. Fertility for pregnancy in women starts with the onset of periods in adolescence and continues till menopause, but this does not mean that every age is equally safe for pregnancy. The age of 20 to 30 years is considered best for pregnancy. After 30, the ability to get pregnant gradually starts decreasing and after 35, the risks start increasing, hence this age is called advanced maternal age.

Why does fertility decrease after 30?

The number of eggs in a woman’s body is decided by birth. With increasing age, both their number and their quality decrease. After 30, it may take more time to conceive. After 35, many women may need medical help and the chances of pregnancy reduce due to decrease in the quality of eggs.
