US President Donald Trump made a statement during the Easter lunch program organized at the White House on Wednesday (April 2, 2026), which caught people’s attention and laughter was also heard at some places. Referring to Palm Sunday in this program, Trump said that on that day people welcomed Jesus Christ as king. After this, Trump said smilingly, ‘Now people call me King too, can you believe it?’

In the same program, White House spiritual advisor Paula White-Cain also gave a statement about Trump, which further increased the controversy. Comparing Trump’s life with the life of Jesus Christ, he said that just as Jesus faced sacrifices and difficulties, Trump too has seen difficult times. Referring to the attack on Trump in 2024, he said that he was cheated, allegations were made against him and his life was in danger. Paula White-Cain further said that just as Jesus was victorious in the end, Trump will also be victorious and God is with him.

Some religious leaders and political people also criticized it. Reverend Benjamin Keremer called it a misuse of God’s name. Democratic Party leader Malcolm Kenyatta shared lines from the Bible and said that no one else should be considered equal to God. Many others also said that such comparison is not right and hurts religious sentiments. Some people also raised questions as to why the religious leaders present at the program did not react to this.

Debate regarding religious matters in America

This controversy has come to light at a time when there has been debate in America on religious matters before. Recently, there was controversy over a statement by Defense Minister Pete Hegseth, in which he used religious words regarding the war. Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV, the head of the Catholic Church, also talked about peace and said that God does not support war and prayers for violence are not accepted.
