When Do Babies Start Teething: During teething, children suddenly become irritable while eating. As soon as this change occurs, parents become nervous. But it is important to understand that teething is a natural process. Between the age of about 6 months to 3 years, 20 milk teeth of children come out from the gums. It may take about one and a half weeks for each tooth to emerge. During this time we cannot stop the process, but we can definitely reduce the pain of the child.

What are the symptoms of teething?

Common symptoms of teething include swollen gums, frequent crying, irritability, trying to put everything in the mouth, excessive drooling, rashes on the face, change in sleep patterns and loss of appetite. There may be a mild fever, but high fever is not a sign of teething. If you are having loose stools three to four times a day, it may be a result of infection caused by frequently putting things in the mouth.

What to do in such situation?

Now the question arises that what to do in such a situation, so first of all give cool and safe things to the child to chew. Cool teethers, fruit nibblers or homemade light fruit popsicles provide soothing relief to the gums. Let the teether cool in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Wrap a cold wet cloth around the finger and let the child chew it or massage it lightly with clean gauze. It is important to clean and sterilize everything thoroughly. While eating, you can give cold curd, rice, soft fruits or such food items which the child can chew lightly. It is normal to lose appetite during this period, so avoid force feeding. If loss of appetite persists for more than two weeks, consult a doctor. Keep giving food at regular time according to age and if necessary give some extra milk and liquid.

What do experts say?

A research study published in the American Academy of Pediatrics recorded children’s symptoms for 19,422 days and analyzed 475 teething events. It found that teething-related symptoms were more prevalent only during a limited 8-day period, four days before, the day of teething, and three days after. The interesting thing was that no single symptom was so common that it could be said with certainty that teething was about to occur. The researcher clearly said that mild symptoms can occur during teething, but if the child has high fever or is in serious trouble, then it should not be ignored considering it to be just teething.
