Will the political balance of Punjab and Haryana change due to delimitation? Sukhbir Singh Badal’s statement created a stir

National President of Shiromani Akali Dal Sukhbir Singh Badal has expressed strong objection to the proposed population-based delimitation of the Central Government. The party supremo has alleged that this step being taken in the name of women’s reservation is discriminatory against Punjab and is going to weaken the federal structure.

Although Badal clarified that she is completely in favor of women’s reservation, she strongly opposes it being used as a cover for implementing delimitation. The Akali Dal says that Punjab will suffer the most from this process, as there is only a slight increase in Lok Sabha seats in the state, while other states will benefit more from it.

Giving the example of Haryana, the Akali Dal Chief said that the seats there can increase by almost 100 percent, due to which its share in the Lok Sabha will almost double. Badal argues that making population the sole basis for delimitation is tantamount to punishing those states that successfully implemented national goals of population control.

According to the Akali Dal, this could increase the combined share of these states to more than 40 percent, which is a threat to the federal structure of the country.
