Why You Feel Anxious Without Your Phone: If the phone is away from you even for a while and you start feeling restless, then it is not just a habit, but a sign that the screen is affecting your body and mind. According to a recent report, people in India will spend a total of 1.1 trillion hours on smartphones in 2024, which means on an average every person spends about 5 hours on the screen every day. Let us tell you how you are facing problems due to this.
making you old before your time
This increasing screen time gradually starts a process inside the body, which can cause premature ageing. The first effect is on sleep. The blue light emitted by using the phone at night suppresses the melatonin hormone produced in the body, which is very important for sleep. Research published in NPJ Digital Health also shows that the more the screen is used at night, the worse will be the sleep.

Thinking ability affected
Lack of sleep is not limited to just fatigue. It has a direct effect on the brain. Research has found that due to this, the memory-related structures of the brain become weak and the ability to think and understand is affected. The report of The Lancet Commission (2024) even states that sleep problems are becoming one of the major causes of dementia. This effect does not stop just at the brain. According to a study published in Frontiers in Microbiology (2023), excessive screen time and poor sleep have a direct impact on our gut microbiome. That means the balance of good bacteria present in the stomach starts deteriorating. This is the reason why screen addiction increases anxiety, low mood and stress.
What do experts say?
Dr. Aaron Hartman explains that sleep, stress and gut health, all three are related to each other, if any one of them goes bad then the others also get affected. Apart from this, a study by Jeroscience (2024) suggests that exposure to artificial light at night increases inflammation in the body, which can reach the brain and cause neuroinflammation. This process causes rapid aging. Dr. John La Puma has named it “digital obesity”, where screen addiction slowly damages both the body and mind. The dopamine that comes with every notification affects the brain in the same way as it does in an addiction.
