The Constitution Amendment Bill related to women’s reservation failed in the Lok Sabha. The government did not get two-thirds majority in the voting held in the Lok Sabha on Friday (April 17). On this, SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav said that we have kept our stand absolutely clear. It seems that the car has stopped, there seems to be some lack of effort. We are in favor of women’s reservation. We are in favor of women getting reservation, they get security, their respect increases, they get space and the place they should get in democracy.

Speaking to the media in the Parliament complex, Akhilesh Yadav further said, “No one in the Samajwadi Party or the opposition opposed women’s reservation. But those who wanted to take away the rights of women, the opposition drew such a Laxman Line that they could not come out of that line.”

Akhilesh Yadav targeted in poetic style

In his X-post he said, “Their fraudulent vehicle once again came to a standstill. Now they will say that our efforts fell short.”

298 votes were cast in favor and 230 against.

Let us tell you that a total of 528 MPs made this demand in the voting in Lok Sabha. The two-thirds majority figure was 352. In the voting, 298 votes were cast in favor, but 54 votes fell short of the two-thirds majority and thus this bill could not be passed in the Lok Sabha.

Along with this bill, the government had also placed ‘Delimitation Bill, 2026’ and ‘Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026’ in the House for discussion and passing, but they too could not be taken forward.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that after the Constitution Amendment Bill has not been passed, both the related bills ‘Delimitation Bill, 2026’ and ‘Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026’ cannot be taken forward.
