Atal Pension Scheme: The Government of India is preparing to increase the scope of social security for workers in the unorganized sector. In view of the rising inflation as well as the increasing expenses after retirement, the government is considering increasing the maximum limit of minimum pension received under Atal Pension Yojana to Rs 10,000 per month.
In India, informal workers i.e. workers in the unorganized sector like…
- street vendors
- domestic workers
- laborer
- and people doing their own business
- These constitute approximately 90 percent of the total workforce.
They do not have facilities like fixed salary, job security or PF-pension, hence such schemes are very important for them.
Why is change necessary?
Talking about Atal Pension Yojana, it was started in May 2015, the objective of which is to provide financial security in old age.
- In this, after the age of 60 years, a guaranteed pension of Rs 1000 to Rs 5000 is available.
- But due to increasing inflation, this money is not considered sufficient.
What is the current situation?
- So far 9 crore people have joined this scheme.
- Also, almost half the people have stopped making regular contributions.
- A record 1.35 crore new people joined in the financial year 2025-26.
What is the new proposal?
Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) and Finance Ministry are working together on this proposal. Now it is expected that the maximum limit of pension should be increased from Rs 5000 to Rs 10,000 per month, so that it remains sufficient for the people in view of the rising inflation.
How will the scheme expand?
The government is planning to take this scheme to every village through Pension Sakhi and Business Correspondent (BC). On January 26, 2026, the Cabinet has approved to continue this scheme till 2031.
Will the burden on the government increase?
- According to experts, there will not be much pressure on the government.
- The scheme is mainly based on people’s own contribution.
