Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026: In Tamil Nadu, the voting which started from 7 am on Thursday (April 23, 2026) for the 234-seat Assembly has been completed. The colors of the election festival in Tamil Nadu were visible on the faces of every voter, be it a man, a woman, an elderly, a disabled person or a youth who is using his franchise for the first time.
Chief Election Commissioner of India (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar has called it a historic election after the completion of the first phase of elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. He said, ‘Since independence, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have shown the highest voting percentage in this election. The Election Commission salutes every voter of Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
Election Commission released Tamil Nadu election figures
He said that this time in Tamil Nadu, 84.69 percent voters have cast their votes, which includes 83.57 percent men, 85.76 percent women and 60.49 percent third gender voters. According to Election Commission data, out of the total 5.73 crore voters in Tamil Nadu, 2.80 crore are male voters, 2.93 crore are female voters and 7,728 are third gender voters.
Voting started late at all polling stations
According to news agency PTI, technical glitches were seen in the electronic voting machines (EVMs) at some polling stations in the state, due to which there was a slight delay in the start of voting. On receiving information about EVM malfunction at the booths, election officials immediately took effective steps so that the voting process could take place without any hindrance. During this time, a large number of voters remained in queues outside the polling booths.
What time was the voting figures in Tamil Nadu?
However, despite problems in some machines, according to Election Commission data in Tamil Nadu, 17.69 percent voting had taken place till 9 am. At the same time, by 11 am this figure had increased to 37.56 percent. By 3 pm, 70 percent voters and by 5 pm 82.24% voters of Tamil Nadu had cast their votes.

During the ongoing voting in Tamil Nadu, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Tamilisai Sundararajan cast her vote from Mylapore constituency. After this, while talking to news agency IANS, the BJP candidate praised the preparations of the Election Commission. He said, ‘The Election Commission has made very good preparations for the elections in the state. He has ensured safe voting. Because of SIR, almost all fake votes have been removed.
How many names were removed during SIR, how many total voters?
The main electoral contest in Tamil Nadu is between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam i.e. DMK led alliance and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam i.e. AIADMK led NDA alliance. A single phase of voting took place in the state, in which more than 5.73 crore voters will decide the fate of more than 4,000 candidates.
According to the Election Commission, there were some 6.41 crore voters in Tamil Nadu before the SIR process. During SIR, names of 1.02 crore i.e. 15.85 percent voters were removed from the voter list of the state and the number of voters came down to 5.67 crore. However, after the process of verifying voters in SIR was completed, the names of about 6 lakh voters were restored and the total number of voters in Tamil Nadu increased to more than 5.73 crore.
