Layoffs in big tech companies: The last month was very turbulent for the global tech industry. During this period, within just one month, big companies like Meta, Oracle and Microsoft together laid off about 46,750 employees.
The surprising thing was that despite investing billions of dollars in AI, companies silently cut their employee numbers. This is a matter of concern for people associated with the tech sector. On one hand, companies are openly talking about growth, innovation and ways of working in the future. At the same time, thousands of people are facing sudden job loss, an uncertain future and a rapidly changing industry.
Meta will lay off 8000 employees
Meta alone is preparing to reduce approximately 8000 people, which is about 10 percent of its total workforce. Not only this, the company has also decided not to fill thousands of vacant posts again, whereas earlier plans were being made to recruit them.
This step has been taken at a time when Meta is rapidly increasing its expenditure on AI. This year the company plans to invest $135 billion in AI, which is almost equal to the total spending on AI in the last three years.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said earlier this year that due to AI, the need for large teams may reduce. He said, “I think 2026 will be the year when AI will start to dramatically change the way we work.”
Same situation with Meta and Oracle
Same is the situation with Oracle, which has laid off 30,000 people in one go. However, the company has not officially disclosed the actual number of people laid off. However, several reports and statements of employees suggest that this figure could be as high as 30,000.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has taken a slightly different approach. Instead of direct layoffs, the company has offered voluntary buyouts to about 7 percent of its employees in the US, numbering about 8,750. This is the first time in its 51-year history that Microsoft has started such a retirement program.
impact on employees
- It is obvious that if there will be retrenchment on such a large scale, the pressure on salary packages in the IT sector will increase.
- Competition among people looking for jobs will increase much more.
- This will also affect countries like India, where these companies have large operations and outsourcing units.
