Bengal Assembly Elections: Many ministers of Trinamool Congress lost the elections
With BJP’s victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and many of her ministers lost the elections. Mamata Banerjee lost to BJP’s Subhendu Adhikari in her home constituency Bhawanipur by 15,105 votes. However, senior Trinamool ministers Shovandeb Chattopadhyay, Firhad Hakim and Javed Khan won the elections. Khan won from Kasba constituency in South Kolkata for the fourth consecutive time, defeating BJP’s Sandeep Mukherjee by 20,974 votes.
In the prestigious Ballygunge constituency of South Kolkata, Shovandeb Chattopadhyay defeated his nearest rival Satroop of the BJP by 61,476 votes. Firhad Hakim, mayor of Kolkata and urban development minister in the outgoing Mamata Banerjee cabinet, defeated BJP’s Rakesh Singh by over 56,000 votes in the Kolkata Port seat. Banerjee’s trusted aide Hakim has won this seat for the fourth consecutive time.
Nayana Bandopadhyay, wife of Trinamool MP Sudip Bandopadhyay, defeated BJP candidate and her nearest rival Santosh Pathak by 22,002 votes in Chowringhee seat. Trinamool minister Uday Guha lost to BJP’s Ajay Rai in Dinhata seat by more than 17,000 votes.
Women and Child Welfare Minister Shashi Panja was defeated by BJP’s Purnima Chakraborty by 14,633 votes in Shyampukur assembly constituency. Trinamool’s Asansol North constituency candidate and minister Malay Ghatak lost to BJP’s Krishnendu Mukherjee by 11,615 votes. Malay had won this seat thrice.
