Kerala: ‘Wayanad will become the next Amethi…’ Why were the posters put up against Rahul Gandhi?

The name of the next Chief Minister of Kerala is likely to be revealed on Wednesday. There are indications that the Congress high command may make its official announcement before noon.

Due to the delay in the decision, uneasiness has increased in the camps of the three main contenders for the post of Chief Minister, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal, Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly VD Satheesan and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala.

Amid ongoing deliberations on the selection of the Chief Minister, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held a meeting with former presidents of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) in Delhi on Tuesday. The objective of this meeting was to end the long standing uncertainty by knowing the views of senior leaders.

According to sources, the leaders called to Delhi shared their opinion for the post of Chief Minister. The names of Venugopal, Satheesan and Chennithala have emerged prominently in the discussions of the high command.

After meeting Rahul Gandhi, former KPCC president K. Muraleedharan said that the party can announce the name of the Chief Minister by Wednesday.

Another former state president VM Sudheeran said that he had discussed in detail the political situation of Kerala and the mood of the people with Rahul. He expressed hope that the party will take the decision keeping in mind the public sentiments.

Meanwhile, the growing tension within the party has come to the fore due to the posters put up in Wayanad targeting Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi.

These posters written in English, put up near the Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC) office, warn that if KC Venugopal is elected Chief Minister, the people of Kerala will not forgive the high command.

A poster claimed that if such a decision is taken, Wayanad will become the ‘next Amethi’.

The poster criticizes Venugopal, calling him Rahul Gandhi’s ‘bag carrier’ and warns that if he gets the support of the leadership, the protests will intensify.

Some posters directly target Rahul and Priyanka and say that Kerala will not forgive their ‘stupid decisions’.

The poster warns the Gandhi brothers and sisters to forget Wayanad and says that they will not be able to win from this region again.

In the assembly elections held last month, the Congress-led UDF won 102 out of 140 seats and secured two-thirds majority.

The decision on the name of the Chief Minister is pending since the results were declared on May 4. Even after party observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik took the opinion of the MLAs and discussed with the central leadership contenders and KPCC President Sunny Joseph, the situation remained unclear.

Congress has 63 MLAs in the 140-member assembly. Its allies include 22 MLAs from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), eight from the Kerala Congress (KEC) and three from the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP).
