Trump’s eyes on Cuba

President Donald Trump made it clear on Wednesday that his government is closely monitoring every activity in Cuba and is alert about the situation there. His statement came at a time when the US Justice Department made several serious allegations against former Cuban President Raul Castro, including murder.

What is the whole matter?

The US Justice Department has made public the indictment against former Cuban President Raul Castro and 5 other people on charges of murder and conspiracy to kill American citizens. The case is related to the shooting down of two planes of the humanitarian aid organization Brothers to the Rescue by the Cuban Air Force in 1996, in which four people died.

These allegations against Raul Castro

According to the indictment filed in federal court in Miami, 94-year-old Raul Castro, who was Cuba’s defense minister at the time, is accused of playing a role in planning and approving the military action. American officials say that this action was part of a conspiracy to take the lives of American citizens.

The case was announced at a press conference in Miami by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and U.S. Attorney for South Florida Jason A. Raiding done by Quinones. He alleged that Cuban military pilots and other officials had shot down two civilian aircraft flying in international airspace on 24 February 1996.

The Brothers to the Rescue organization was involved in the search and assistance of people fleeing Cuba by sea. After the incident, the then Cuban leader Fidel Castro took responsibility for the downing of the planes and claimed that the organization had dropped anti-government leaflets over Havana.

Demand for action that has been going on for 3 decades

For the last three decades, the Cuban-American community, exiled activists and families of the deceased have been demanding criminal action against Raul Castro. The organization’s founder, Jose Basulto, said that ‘the delay in justice for 30 years has been the greatest injustice itself’.

There will be no tax investigation for the rest of his life against Trump, who shook the stock market by buying shares worth billions, why the exemption?

Cuban government did not respond

The Cuban government has not given any official response to the latest allegations. However, earlier Havana had said that it had made diplomatic efforts for a long time to stop these flights.

According to experts, this indictment has come at a time when Cuba is facing a serious economic and energy crisis. Recently, CIA Director John Ratcliffe also visited Cuba, where he discussed with the Cuban leadership regarding economic reforms and intelligence activities of Russia and China.
