Vinesh Phogat reached Indira Gandhi Stadium in Delhi on Saturday morning to give trials for selection for Asian Games 2026. When Vinesh was weighed this morning, she was told that she would be allowed to compete only in the 50kg category. On this, the female wrestler protested and alleged that the federation was discriminating against her. As the controversy escalated, WFI President Sanjay Singh intervened and decided to allow Vinesh to participate in the 53kg category trials as well.

Vinesh Phogat will compete in the 53kg category in the trials. Although he had participated in the 50kg category in some of his previous events, this also includes the Paris Olympics 2024. Women’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed at Indira Gandhi Stadium for the trials for the selection of women wrestlers in the Asian Games 2026.

Speaking to PTI, WFI President Sanjay Singh said, “After Vinesh made her allegations, we allowed the officials to measure her weight. We do not want to discriminate against anyone. Vinesh Phogat had not told in which category she wanted to compete, yet we included her.” Vinesh Phogat’s weight was 53.9, she has been included in the 53kg category.

What did Vinesh Phogat say

Now in this category, Vinesh may face experienced wrestler Anant Panghal and emerging talent Meenakshi Goyat. While preparing for the trials, Vinesh said while talking to the media that she has entered the field with the intention of continuing competitive wrestling for at least two years. “I am here for at least two years,” he said.

The federation had said that due to continuously playing in 50kg category in international tournaments and not giving formal notice of change in weight category, Vinesh would be considered only in that category. There was already discussion regarding this. Recently, the Delhi High Court had directed the WFI to recognize Vinesh as a ‘distinguished athlete’ and allow her to participate in the Asian Games selection trials.

Vinesh Phogat has competed in many weight categories in her career, including 53kg. She wanted to give trial in this category. The players who win the trials will get an opportunity to represent India in the Asian Games to be held this year.
