Can Weight Loss Reverse Fatty Liver Disease: Fatty liver was considered a minor problem for a long time. Many people found it mentioned in ultrasound reports, but because no specific symptoms were seen, it was ignored. However, now doctors say that this mistake can cause serious problems in future. Fatty liver cases are increasing rapidly in India. Obesity, type-2 diabetes, unhealthy eating habits, less physical activity, poor sleep and stressful lifestyle are considered to be the main reasons for this. The most worrying thing is that this disease keeps growing in the body for many years without any obvious symptoms.

Why is early identification important?

Dr Shaleen Aggarwal told TOI that fatty liver is one of the few liver diseases that can be cured to a great extent in the early stages. But for this it is very important to take timely steps. In fact, when excessive fat starts accumulating in the liver cells, the normal functioning of the liver starts getting affected. The liver performs many important functions in the body like processing nutrients, removing toxic substances and controlling metabolism. Therefore, deterioration in its health can affect the entire body.

What is the situation in India?

According to a research published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology, one out of every three people in urban India may be affected by some level of fatty liver. Experts believe that this figure is continuously increasing with the increase in obesity and diabetes.

Can you fix this at home?

The biggest question is whether fatty liver can be cured by losing weight? On this, Dr. Shaleen Aggarwal says that in the initial stage the answer is yes. He says that the liver has an amazing ability to repair itself, provided the damage is not permanent. Several studies led by the National Institutes of Health have found that reducing just 5 percent of total body weight can reduce the fat stored in the liver. At the same time, by reducing weight by 7 to 10 percent, improvement in liver inflammation has also been seen. In some cases, early fibrosis i.e. scars formed on the liver can also be reduced.

What things should be kept in mind?

Experts do not recommend crash diets or rapid weight loss. He says that the most effective solution is balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, blood sugar control and adopting healthy habits in the long run. Dr. Shaleen Aggarwal warns that if fatty liver is ignored, it can further lead to liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure and even liver cancer. Many times patients reach the hospital when the condition has become so serious that liver transplant is the only option left.
