The long-running talks between America and Iran have now reached a critical juncture. Axios report claims that US President Donald Trump has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that a peace agreement with Iran can be signed in the coming days. According to the report, Trump said during the phone conversation that this is a big deal and now the time has come to end this war. It is being told that the officials of America and Iran also believe that the agreement is much closer than before, although the final agreement is still pending.

Netanyahu told Trump during the conversation that he was confident that any final agreement would take full account of Israel’s security concerns related to Iran’s nuclear program. The report also says that Netanyahu now understands that it will be difficult to stop the Trump administration from moving forward towards an agreement.

Netanyahu changed his plan

At the beginning of the war, Netanyahu believed that this fight could help in the direction of regime change in Iran, but now his strategy seems to be changing amidst possible elections and international pressure. His opponents are alleging that Israel is showing softness in its stance by accepting Trump’s peace initiative. The report also claims that Netanyahu had planned major attacks on Iran’s energy and infrastructure targets this week, but Trump stopped the move at the last moment. However, this claim has not been independently confirmed.

Israeli Defense Minister’s statement

Israel’s biggest concern is that after the agreement, Iran can get economic relief and it can strengthen its economy through oil exports. Israeli officials fear that Tehran may delay necessary concessions on the nuclear program. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has said that America is negotiating keeping in mind its national interests, but Israel wants no agreement on issues related to Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missiles and regional allies. He also reiterated that Israel is capable of taking action at its own level if needed. According to a senior US administration official, America is hoping to sign a preliminary agreement with Iran in the next few days. The official says that the probability of a successful agreement has now reached 80 to 85 percent.

Emphasis on reducing tension in the Strait of Hormuz

Under the proposed agreement, a 60-day ceasefire can be implemented. After this, further talks will begin regarding possible relief in sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program. According to the report, this agreement may reduce tension in the Strait of Hormuz and maritime trade is expected to normalize. America says that Iran will have to fulfill its commitments before any economic relief. These may include handing over more enriched uranium and taking steps related to nuclear facilities. US officials believe that this agreement could become the foundation of a larger regional peace framework in the future involving Israel, Lebanon, Iran and the Gulf countries.
