- Prevent unauthorized connections by hiding Wi-Fi network SSID.
Wi-Fi Mistakes: Often, due to some small and unknowing mistake of ours, neighbors or nearby people start using our Wi-Fi without any permission. This not only slows down your internet speed, but also poses a big threat to your security and privacy online.
Where is the mistake happening?
Many times people change the Wi-Fi password, but leave the password of the main login page of the router as Admin, password or 1234. In such a situation, any clever person can enter the settings of your router with this default password and see your Wi-Fi password. To avoid this, open your router’s IP address (like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) in the browser. Then go to Settings and create a new and strong admin password under ‘Admin Password’ or ‘System Tools’.
Always keep the password strong
Always keep the name of Wi-Fi such that you cannot be identified. By naming the Wi-Fi after your name or house number or by entering mobile number or date of birth or 12345678 in the password, neighbors can easily guess and tamper with it. Password should be at least 10-12 characters long, which should include capital letters, small letters, numbers and special characters from A to Z.
Turn off WPS feature
The router has a WPS button on the back. If this feature is enabled in the router’s settings, then there are many hacking apps that connect to your Wi-Fi by just cracking the 8-digit PIN without the password. To avoid this, go to the wireless settings of the router and disable WPS or WPS Hardware Button.
Set Security Protocol to WPA2 or WPA3
Older routers used WEP or WPA for security, which are easy to hack. To avoid this, first go to the wireless security settings of the router. There set the ‘Security Mode’ to WPA2-PSK (AES) or WPA3 if your router is new.
Along with this, hide the SSID of WiFi. If your Wi-Fi network appears in the network list of everyone’s mobile or laptop, then everyone tries to connect to it. The way to avoid this is to go to the router settings and uncheck/disable ‘Hide SSID’ or ‘Broadcast SSID’. After this your Wi-Fi will not be visible. To add a new device, you will have to type the name of the Wi-Fi manually.
