WPI Data: Wholesale inflation in the country increased to 9.68 percent in May 2026, which was 8.26 percent in April 2026. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry released these figures on Monday – the special thing is that this time the Ministry has released WPI on the basis of new base year 2022-23 instead of the old base year 2011-12.
fuel biggest shock
The biggest jump in wholesale inflation came in the fuel and power sector. Inflation in fuel and power was 30.33 percent in May 2026, which was 24.89 percent in April. The prices of mineral oil i.e. petroleum products increased by 49.82 percent. Inflation of crude oil and natural gas stood at 61.51 percent. The turmoil in the global oil market due to the West Asia conflict is believed to be the main reason for this.
Primary Commodities and Manufacturing
Inflation in primary articles i.e. things related to agriculture and mining was 4.99 percent in May, which was 3.78 percent in April. Non-food articles became costlier by 9.49 percent. Inflation of manufactured products stood at 7.48 percent, which is more than 6.68 percent in April. Significant growth was seen in chemicals, basic metals and textiles.
food items
Inflation of WPI food index was 4.49 percent in May 2026, which was 3.11 percent in April. The reason for this was the increase in prices of edible oil, eggs, meat, fish and food products. However, the prices of pulses, potatoes and onions are still lower than a year ago.
New WPI series implemented from today
From today, the government has changed the base year of WPI from 2011-12 to 2022-23. The number of items in the new series has been increased from 697 to 957. Besides, Output Producer Price Index and Service Producer Price Index have also been released from today. Banking, insurance, telecom, railway and air passenger services have been included in the service sector. The next WPI report for June 2026 will come on July 14.
