Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) on the sidelines of the G7 Summit held in Evian, France, to which the Congress Party has given its response on Thursday (June 18, 2026). The Congress Party said that we had hoped that PM Modi would take advantage of this meeting and strongly defend India’s energy sovereignty, economic interests and strategic autonomy, but nothing like this was seen during the summit.
This summit shows the gap between claims and results – Khurshid
Congress Party’s External Affairs Department Head and former Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid has issued an official statement on Thursday (June 18, 2026) on the social media platform X on PM Modi’s visit to France for the G-7 summit. In which the party said, ‘Congress had hoped that PM Modi would use the G-7 summit held in France as an opportunity to establish India’s leadership role in the Global South and strongly defend India’s energy sovereignty, economic interests and strategic autonomy, but this summit only shows a disturbing gap between claims and results.’

What did Khurshid say on Modi-Trump meeting?
Salman Khurshid also criticized the meeting between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump in the G-7 summit. He said, ‘Despite claims of deep friendship with President Trump in his meetings with him, PM Modi neither took a clear and strong stand before the President to protect India’s energy sovereignty, nor was he able to obtain a sanction waiver from OFAC, which could have allowed the import of oil from Russia to continue.’
He said, ‘This is a missed opportunity and adds to the repeated compromises made by the BJP government on matters related to India’s energy sovereignty (first by ending subsidized oil purchases from Iran and Venezuela and then by cutting imports from Russia). The result of this is that Indians will continue to get fuel at higher prices and consumers will continue to bear the burden of inflation.
Congress leader spoke about Operation Sindoor
During this, former Foreign Minister and Congress leader Salman Khurshid commented about India’s Operation Sindoor. He said, ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi remained mysteriously silent even when the US President indirectly claimed that he had played a role in establishing ceasefire after Operation Sindoor.
He said, ‘Such silence can be seen either as tacit acceptance of the President’s claims or as a willingness to publicly refute them. This also harms the long-term foreign policy principle of India, according to which mediation by any third party is not accepted in bilateral matters.
