Anger and protests have erupted in Ladakh’s Kargil district after unidentified people allegedly desecrated Muharram banners and other religious symbols and threw them into the Suru river passing through the city.

What is the whole matter?

Flags, banners, sacred religious flags (Alam-e-Hussein) and other religious symbols were installed on the Hardas Thang bridge on 1 Muharram. On the night of 17th and 18th June, unknown mischievous elements insulted them and the local people recovered them the next morning. As soon as news of this alleged insult spread in the city, a large number of residents took to the streets in protest and demanded the identification of the culprits and strict action against them.

Administration called emergency meeting

Following the incident, Kargil Chief Executive Counsel (CEC) Firoz Khan – who represents the civil administration – along with senior officials of the Ladakh Police and the Indian Army, immediately called an emergency meeting with religious representatives and local citizens to discuss the situation on the desecration of Alam-e-Hussain at Hardas Thang bridge.

During the meeting, officials said that the incident took place under the cover of darkness in an area where there was no CCTV coverage. This further increased the anger of the local people. They allege that a deep conspiracy has been hatched to incite communal tension in the district during the month of Muharram.
