At present the DGP is paid under the Seventh Pay Commission. This post comes under the Apex scale, which is among the highest pay scales in the government service. The basic salary of DGP is around Rs 2.25 lakh per month. Apart from this, they also get dearness allowance, traveling allowance and other government facilities. At present, after adding dearness allowance, an additional amount of more than Rs 1 lakh is added to the basic salary. At the same time, if government accommodation is not provided to the officers, then house rent allowance is also given. Including various allowances and facilities, the total monthly income of DGP reaches approximately 3 lakh to 4 lakh.

What is the path to become DGP?
To become a DGP, first of all the candidate has to pass the Civil Services Examination of the Union Public Service Commission and get selected in the Indian Police Service. After becoming an IPS officer, the officer’s career passes through many stages. Generally the officer starts at the level of Deputy Superintendent of Police. Then one reaches the post of Additional Superintendent of Police, Superintendent of Police, Senior Superintendent of Police, Deputy Inspector General, Inspector General, Additional Director General of Police and finally DGP. This post is given on the basis of long experience, good service record and seniority, hence it takes several decades of service to become DGP.
