QR Codes Mandatory for Vaccines: The central government has taken a big decision regarding medicines. Now it will be necessary to put QR codes on vaccines, antibiotics, cancer medicines and drugs. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has made changes in the Drugs Rules 1945 for this. Till now this rule was applicable only to the top 300 drug brands of the country. Now its scope has been expanded to include all vaccines, antibiotics, narcotic and psychotropic drugs covered under the NDPS Act and all cancer medicines.
QR code will be required on product packaging
According to the new rule, drug manufacturing companies will have to put bar code or QR code on the packaging of their products. If there is less space on the packaging then this code can be applied on secondary packaging. By scanning this code, people will be able to see complete information about the medicine. The QR code will contain information about the unique code of the medicine, its generic and brand name, company name and address, batch number, date of manufacture and expiry, manufacturing license number and, if necessary, the ingredients found in the medicine.

Identification of fake and substandard medicines will become easier
The government says that this decision will help in stopping fake and substandard medicines. Identification and testing of medicines will become easier at every stage in the supply chain. This will also help in fighting the problem related to the adverse effects of antibiotics i.e. anti-microbial resistance because it will be easier to identify fake and weak antibiotics.
The rule will come into effect from July 1, 2027
Companies have been given full time to implement the new rules. This rule will be applicable on vaccines, narcotic drugs and cancer medicines from July 1, 2027. Whereas this rule on antibiotics will be implemented from July 1, 2028.
