Social Media Influencers: An important news has come out from SEBI for people having a large number of followers on social media. Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed a change in the new rules related to advertisements, under which if a person has more than 5 lakh followers or subscribers on any one social media platform, then he will be included in the category of celebrity.
According to the new draft of SEBI, now the definition of celebrity is not limited to just film stars, but new faces like social media influencers, TV anchors, sportspersons, reality show winners and digital avatars will also be included in it.
Which people will be considered celebrities?
According to SEBI’s proposal, eight different criteria have been set to consider any person or character as a celebrity. Through this, if you fulfill any one of these conditions, then you can be considered a celebrity under advertising rules.

Apart from this, if you play the lead role in TV serials, TV shows, films and web series of OTT platform, then you can also become a part of this category. Especially seeing the increasing influence of social media, influencers who have more than 5 lakh followers on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X can also be included in it.
Players, TV hosts and AI avatars will also be included.
- In the SEBI draft, players representing the country at the international level have also been considered a part of celebrity.
- Especially among them there will be players participating in big sports like Commonwealth Games, Olympics, Cricket and Asian Games.
- Apart from this, such TV hosts and anchors can also be included as celebrities, who have worked in any show for at least one season or 10 episodes.
- Hosts of quiz shows, cooking shows, comedy shows, dance and singing competitions can also come under its purview.
- AI avatars created by computers that look like humans can also be considered celebrities.
