- China described it as an important public welfare project for Bangladesh.
India has already expressed its concern regarding Bangladesh’s Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP). The reason for this is that by doing this, Beijing’s reach will become very close to the chicken neck. Despite this, China has once again reiterated its cooperation with Bangladesh regarding this project. China has said that its cooperation with Bangladesh should be free from the influence of any third party.
What did the Chinese Foreign Ministry say on the matter?
Addressing a press conference in the capital Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, when asked about the serious concerns expressed by India on this matter, said, ‘I want to make it clear that the cooperation between China and Bangladesh does not target any third party and should remain free from the influence of any third party.’

In fact, the Teesta River basin is located very close to the area of the North-Eastern states of India, for which this joint initiative of Dhaka-Beijing is the main basis of India’s concern. China has termed this project as an important project related to the lives of the people of Bangladesh.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, ‘Comprehensive treatment and restoration of Teesta River is a very public welfare project, which Bangladesh attaches great importance to. China is ready to provide all possible help in support of this project.
He further said, ‘China is ready to better coordinate development strategies with Bangladesh and further strengthen exchanges and cooperation on issues such as trade, water conservancy and public welfare.’
What is India’s concern regarding Teesta River Project?
India’s main concern regarding Bangladesh’s Teesta River Project is about China’s increasing role in it, because Teesta River is located very close to India’s strategically sensitive Siliguri Corridor, which is also known as Chicken Neck.
The expansion of any external influence in the region, especially China’s growing presence, could increase India’s security concerns and pose a potential strategic threat to the vital corridor that connects India’s northeastern states with the rest of the country.
