Iran has sent a formal invitation to several Indian leaders to attend the multi-day state funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran. The funeral rituals will take place from July 4 to July 9, 2026 in the cities of Tehran, Qom and Mashhad.
Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and President of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti has accepted the official invitation to attend the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and she will go to Iran.
Confirming this, Mehbooba Mufti told ABP News that she will go to Iran. When asked about plans to visit Iran, Mehbooba Mufti said, “Yes, Insha Allah.” Mehbooba Mufti will express her condolences to the Iranian leadership and people during the period of state mourning and pay her last respects.
Invitation to many Kashmiri leaders
The invitation was sent to the PDP chief as well as other Kashmiri leaders through diplomatic channels, including Shia leader and National Conference (NC) MP Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Shia cleric and J&K People’s Conference leader Imran Ansari, prominent MP representing Ladakh Mohammed Hanifa and Shia cleric Masroor Abbas Ansari and Aga Syed Hasan Mosavi al-Kashmir. Why will PM Modi not attend?
Although Iranian President Massoud Pejeshkian had originally sent an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister will not be able to attend due to previously scheduled state visits to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. Instead, the Government of India will be officially represented by a high-level delegation, including Governor of Bihar Lieutenant General (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pavitra Margherita.

This development comes amid increased diplomatic activities after the demise of the Iranian leader and many leaders from across the world are expected to attend the funeral rituals. These include Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Naveen, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Congress leader and Foreign Affairs Department Chairman Salman Khurshid, senior Congress leader Pawan Khera, senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Uttar Pradesh MPs Imran Masood and Afzal Ansari.
