‘India would be dirty, had it been there…’, what did Indira Nooyi say, praised China a lot, created an uproar

Indian-origin businesswoman Indira Nooyi has made many such statements comparing India and China, which can spark debate. Praising America’s merit-based system, she said that if she had remained in India, she probably would not have been able to become the CEO of a big company. At the same time, he described China as a more organized and convenient country than India.

‘Had I lived in India, I would not have been able to become a CEO’
In an interview given to the Hoover Institution, former PepsiCo CEO Indira Nooyi said that America’s merit-based system got her to a position which perhaps was not possible in India. He said, ‘An immigrant comes to America empty-handed and becomes the CEO of a prestigious American company. This cannot happen in any other country in the world. Had I lived in India, I would never have been able to become a CEO.

Praising China, calling India disorganized
Comparing India and China, Nooyi said that living in China as a tourist is easier than living in India. He said, ‘If you like a clean and organized life then it will be difficult for you to live in India. The beauty of India lies in its chaos. If you like it, you will want to come here again and again. Giving the example of cows roaming between vehicles on the roads, he said that Indians know how to find their way even in this environment.

Limited opportunities for women in India
Recalling her childhood, Indira Nooyi said that the India of the 1960s and 1970s was quite different from today. At that time, the social role of women was limited and most women remained confined to the house. However, she said that her father and grandfather always inspired her to dream big and move forward, due to which she was able to go to America and make her mark.

Democracy is India’s biggest strength
Nooyi said that China developed rapidly because of the centralized system, whereas in India, because of democracy, it takes more time to take decisions. Despite this, he praised Indian democracy and said that peaceful transfer of power is possible in a democratic system and this is its biggest strength.

Opinion also expressed on India-America relations
Indira Nooyi described India and America as ‘natural partners’. He said that India is the largest democracy in the world and has a young population, English speaking people and huge talent in the fields of software, engineering and AI. According to him, India can become an important strategic partner of America in the changing global environment.
