Lokhande Prashant Sitaram is currently the chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and he will also continue to hold the additional charge of this post. This system will remain in force until a regular appointment is made to this post or a new order is not issued by the Central Government.
DoPT issued appointment order
According to the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on July 2, 2026, Lokhande Prashant Sitaram has been appointed as Additional Secretary in the Home Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Along with the appointment, he has also been given the responsibility of continuing the additional charge of CBSE Chairperson. This decision has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Central Government.
Over two decades of administrative experience
Lokhande Prashant Sitaram is a senior IAS officer of the year 2001 batch of AGMUT cadre. He has more than two decades of experience in administrative service and has served on many important posts related to education, administration and policy making. In view of his administrative experience, the Central Government has assigned him this new responsibility.
What will be the role in Home Ministry?
The post of Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry is considered very important. Officers at this level play an important role in the implementation of the policies of the ministry, coordination between various departments and important administrative decisions. In such a situation, Lokhande Prashant Sitaram will now also handle the responsibility of major works related to the Home Ministry.

CBSE’s responsibility will also continue
His role as CBSE chairperson will also continue. Thousands of affiliated schools in the country and abroad operate under the board. The chairperson plays an important role in curriculum, examination system, evaluation system, results, school affiliation and many major decisions related to education. In such a situation, to maintain the continuity of work related to the education sector, this additional charge has been given to him.
The system will remain in effect till regular appointment
After this decision of the Central Government, Lokhande Prashant Sitaram will perform two important responsibilities simultaneously. On one hand, he will lead the administrative work as Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry, while on the other hand, he will also continue to monitor important decisions related to the school education system of the country through the additional charge of CBSE Chairperson. The government has clarified that this arrangement will remain effective until a regular appointment is made to the post of CBSE Chairperson or no further new order is issued.
