The final farewell ceremony of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will begin from Saturday (July 4), preparations for which have intensified. Delegations from different countries have started reaching Tehran. In this sequence, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from India, Mehbooba Mufti along with the Indian delegation paid tribute to Supreme Leader Khamenei.
During this, along with him, senior Congress leader and Congress Foreign Affairs Chief Salman Khurshid and many other Shia leaders also offered Salat-al-Janaza (funeral prayers) and prayed for the deceased. According to Al Jazeera report, more than 20 million people are expected to reach Tehran to attend the final farewell ceremony. The programs related to the funeral will continue till July 9. After this, Khamenei will be buried in his native city Mashhad.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who ruled Iran for nearly 36 years, was killed in the US-Israel air strike on February 28, 2026. After this, war broke out in the Middle East and due to this the Strait of Hormuz had to be closed. There was a huge rise in the prices of oil and LPG gas in many countries of the world including India.
Crores of people will take to the streets
During Khamenei’s six-day funeral procession, special religious programs and condolence meetings will also be held in Qom city on July 7. Iranian officials estimate that millions of people will take to the streets during this 6-day mourning. Huge posters and hoardings of Khamenei have been put up across Iran.
Why did PM Modi not attend?
Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian had also formally invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the funeral and burial programs. However, PM Modi could not be a part of this delegation due to previously scheduled foreign tours. According to sources, Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita will lead this Indian delegation from the Government of India.
