Did you drop or get relief? BCCI breaks silence regarding Sanju Samson, gives reason for staying out of Zimbabwe tour

Sanju Samson: After Sanju Samson’s name was not included in the Indian team for the T20 series against Zimbabwe, the discussion intensified whether he has been dropped. However, now the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified the position on this. According to the board, Sanju has not been dropped from the team, rather he has been rested keeping in mind the busy international schedule and Asian Games.

BCCI explained the reason for absence

The 15-member Indian team was announced on Monday (July 6) for the three-match T20 series against Zimbabwe. Prabhasimran Singh, Abhishek Sharma and 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi got a place as opening batsmen in the team, but Sanju Samson’s name was not included. After this, questions started being raised on the decision of the selectors. A senior BCCI source told news agency PTI that the chances of Sanju Samson getting a chance in the playing eleven on the Zimbabwe tour were very less. In such a situation, instead of sending him with the team, it was decided to give him rest and give opportunities to the young players.

Sanju will play in Asian Games

The source said, ‘Why is Sanju so surprised at being rested for the Zimbabwe tour? Those who are questioning this decision should know that Sanju is part of the Indian team for the Asian Games to be held in September. When he was not going to get a chance to play on the Zimbabwe tour, there was no point in taking him with the team. He is a senior player.

Questions were also raised on recent performance

The discussion about Sanju Samson being out of the team also intensified because his performance in the recent matches was not as expected. He scored 0 and 5 on the Ireland tour. After this, he was out after scoring just 1 run in the first T20 against England. After three consecutive bad innings, he was dropped from the playing eleven in the second T20 and Vaibhav Suryavanshi got a chance to debut in his place.

Was a hero in the World Cup

However, before the recent poor form, Sanju Samson had performed brilliantly in the T20 World Cup 2026. He played a big role in making India the champion by playing important innings of 97, 89 and 89 not out in the knockout matches. For this performance he was chosen ‘Player of the Tournament’.

After this, in IPL 2026 also, Sanju scored 477 runs in 14 matches. However, his bat remained calm in the initial matches against Ireland and England. Now BCCI has made it clear that the reason for his absence from the Zimbabwe tour is not because of his poor form, but because of the rest given to him and his future plans.
