Babar Azam had resigned from the captaincy after Pakistan’s exit from World Cup 2023. Babar was captaining all three formats at that time, but after the defeat, he had decided to retire from all formats.

After this the performance of Pakistan team was very poor. The team could not play in the knockout matches of any ICC tournament. After the retirement of Babar Azam, the T20 command was handed over to Shaheen Afridi and the Test captaincy was handed over to Shan Masood.
Due to poor captaincy, Shaheen was removed from the captaincy after just four months. After that, Babar Azam was once again seen captaining in T20. In 2024, Babar once again resigned from the T20 captaincy.
Rizwan was dropped
After his resignation, Mohammad Rizwan was given the captaincy of Pakistan team in ODI and T20, but in March 2025, Salman Ali Aga was given the captaincy of T20 and Rizwan was dropped.
In the year 2025 itself, Mohammad Rizwan was also removed from the ODI captaincy. In his place, the command of Pakistan team in ODI was given to Shaheen Afridi. Now in the year 2026, the Test match captaincy was snatched away from Shan Masood and given to former Pakistan captain Babar Azam. At present, Babar Azam is in charge of Test matches, Salman Ali Aga is in charge of T20 and Shaheen Afridi is in charge of ODI.
Who got the captaincy how many times?
-Babar Azam was given captaincy thrice. Babar was the captain in all three formats till 2023, but in the year 2024, he was appointed the captain of T20 and currently in 2026, he was appointed the captain of Test.
-Shaheen Afridi was given captaincy twice. Shaheen became the T20 captain in the year 2023 and the ODI captain in the year 2025.
-Shan Masood was made the captain once. In the year 2023, Shan was the captain of the Test team and in the year 2026, he was removed from the captaincy. In his place, the captaincy of the Test team has now been handed over to Babar.
-Mohammed Rizwan was made captain once. In October 2024, he was made the captain of ODI and T20.
-Salman Ali Aga was also captain only once. In the year 2025, Salman was given the captaincy of Pakistan team only in T20.
