Mumbai News: Strict action on Marathi signboards in Mumbai, checking of 10 lakh establishments; Fine imposed for breaking rules

Once again the issue of Marathi language is heated in Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken action against not putting up signboards in Marathi language on shops and establishments in Mumbai. The government has given this information while answering the questions of the MLA in the Assembly.

In fact, MLA Santosh Danve had raised a question in the Assembly regarding following the rules of putting signboards in Marathi language on shops and establishments in Mumbai. In a written reply to the MLA’s questions, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that putting up signboards in Marathi (Devanagari) is mandatory by law and the Supreme Court had also directed to follow it on September 25, 2023.

Inspection of more than 10 lakh establishments by June 4, 2026

According to the government, from November 2023 to June 4, 2026, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation inspected more than 10 lakh establishments. The government said that out of 2,00,067 establishments located on major roads, Marathi nameplates were found at 1,93,747, while action was proposed on 6,320 establishments.

Fine collected from 3,861 establishments

Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde told the Assembly that of these, more than ₹ 1.95 crore fine was collected from 3,861 establishments, 1,003 establishments settled the case by paying ₹ 1.02 crore compounding fee, while 1,456 cases are still pending in the court.

Government admitted shortage of officers

On the question of shortage of officers, the government admitted that out of 121 sanctioned posts, only 53 officers are working and 68 posts are vacant, the process of filling which is in the final stage. The government also informed that a special investigation campaign was conducted from May 14 to June 4, 2026 and public awareness campaign regarding Marathi name plates is also going on.

Let us tell you that putting up signboards in Marathi (Devanagari) is mandatory by law and the Supreme Court had also directed to follow it on 25 September 2023. BMC is also continuing its action to impose fines on those who violate the rules.
