India’s First Hydrogen Train: A new and green beginning is going to take place in the history of Indian Railways. Prime Minister Modi will flag off the country’s first indigenous hydrogen train from Jind, Haryana on July 17. This train will be run as a special inaugural service on Jind-Sonipat section of Haryana on 17th July. With this, India has joined the list of select countries like Japan, America, Canada and South Korea where hydrogen trains are currently in use. The first hydrogen train running between Jind and Sonipat will cover a total distance of 89 kilometers in 2 hours and will have a total of 12 stations along its route;

Now let us tell you what is the specialty of the first hydrogen train? This train will have a total of 10 coaches with 682 seats and the passenger capacity of the entire train will be around 2,600. Although the maximum speed of this train is 120 km/hr, the trial of which has also been done successfully, but the operational speed of the train was kept at 75 km/hr, for which permission has been given by the Railway Board. The power capacity of the train will be 2400 kW in which 1200 kW hydrogen fuel cell system engine has been installed.

However, hydrogen train, also known as ‘hydrail’ or ‘H-train’, is considered a green and clean alternative to diesel engines on non-electrified rail routes, as it does not cause any pollution. The technology behind its operation is that hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through chemical reaction, but in this entire process, CO2 i.e. carbon dioxide is not emitted and only water vapor comes out.
However, at present the common people will have to wait a little while traveling by this train because a senior railway official said that the train will be operated as a special service for the inauguration on July 17. The decision as to when regular passenger service will start has not been taken yet.
