The gods and demons started churning the milky ocean to get nectar. Mandarachal mountain became the churner and Nagraj Vasuki became the rope. Then the terrible Halala poison appeared from the sea. Its flames and poisonous smoke surrounded all three worlds. An atmosphere of fear, chaos and destruction was created all around. The entire creation was in trouble.

The gods and demons got scared due to the terrible heat of Halahal poison. No one was able to stop that poison. Everyone reached Kailash, where Lord Shiva was absorbed in deep samadhi. With folded hands he prayed, “Lord, only you can save the world from this great destruction.” There was only one hope everywhere, Mahadev.

To save the universe from destruction, Lord Shiva took Halahal poison in his hands without thinking a moment. He drank it with a calm mind and unshakable courage. There was no fear on his face, but compassion and sacrifice for the entire world. This became his greatest sacrifice.

When Halahal poison started entering Lord Shiva’s body, Mother Parvati became worried. He immediately held Mahadev’s throat with his hands, so that the poison did not reach the stomach. Due to his divine power the poison stopped in the throat. This moment became a wonderful symbol of the love, courage and protection of Mother Parvati.

Lord Shiva’s throat became dark blue due to Halahal poison stopping in the throat. Since then he started being worshiped by the name of ‘Neelkanth’. Mahadev remained absorbed in meditation in a calm manner. His blue throat became an immortal symbol of sacrifice, patience and the supreme sacrifice made for the protection of the world.

To calm the intense burning sensation of Halahal poison, the gods offered cool water and milk to Lord Shiva. Mahadev wore the moon on his head and gave place to Mother Ganga in his hair. Since then, devotees remember the sacrifice, compassion and divine glory of Neelkanth Mahadev by offering water, Belpatra and Dhatura.
