US President Donald Trump on Sunday (July 12, 2026) expressed grief over the death of Republican Party Senator Lindsey Graham, one of his close aides. Trump said Lindsay was a true American patriot and he will be greatly missed. Meanwhile, Trump said that he had talked to Lindsay on the phone a few hours before his death. He said, Lindsay was like a family member to me. We used to talk on the phone every day and play golf together.
What happened between Trump and Lindsay?
In an interview with NBC, Trump said, ‘Graham called me in the evening and discussed the Save America Act. This is a bill that would reshape the way elections are conducted, but it has not received enough support to pass the Senate. Trump said in CNN’s State of the Union program, ‘Graham was also telling me about his trip on the phone. Graham could resolve issues with Democrats. If I had a problem with a Democrat, he would find a solution.
Lindsay was a critic of Trump
Graham had pressured Trump to support Ukraine in the war against Russia. On Friday (10 July 2026), a day before his death, he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev. He had urged Trump to take a tough stance against Iran and advocated military action. When Trump first ran for president, Graham was his critic. During that time, Graham strongly condemned Trump’s campaign and described it as based on hatred of foreign citizens (xenophobia), racial hatred and religious fanaticism.
Trump told how he became friends with Lindsay
Graham publicly admitted that he neither voted for Donald Trump nor Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 general election. However, with time, there was a big change in their relationship. Donald Trump himself mentioned this change in the ‘Meet the Press’ program and said that when he won the South Carolina primary during the 2016 campaign, Graham respected it. Trump said, ‘After this we became friends and our friendship continued to grow. He has proven to be an amazing supporter and it is difficult to find someone like him.
