Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoshevsky has made a big claim while openly praising the diplomatic role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He says that during the Russia-Ukraine war, when there was a possibility of Russia using tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine in late 2022, Prime Minister Modi played an important role in stopping Russian President Vladimir Putin from taking such a step. He said that among the selected leaders of the world, PM Modi is such a leader to whom Putin listens seriously.
Impact of old relations between India and Russia
In a press conference held in New Delhi after the India-Poland Joint Economic Commission meeting, Bartoshevsky said that India and Russia (earlier the Soviet Union) have decades-old strategic relations. For this reason, President Putin gives importance to the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that PM Modi is a respected global leader and his words have an impact at the international level.

Claim of ban on use of nuclear weapons in 2022

After Bartoshevsky’s statement, that meeting of September 2022 once again came into discussion, when during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Uzbekistan, Prime Minister Modi had told Putin, ‘Today is not the era of war.’ This statement was much discussed all over the world at that time.
India always laid emphasis on dialogue
Since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, India has been continuously talking about a solution through dialogue and diplomacy. India refused to join Western sanctions on Russia and maintained its relations with both sides. Prime Minister Modi had frequent talks with both Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He also visited Kiev in 2024 and met Zelensky at several international forums.
India continues to buy oil from Russia
Despite pressure from America and European countries, India continued purchasing crude oil from Russia at concessional rates. India says that this decision has been taken keeping in mind the country’s energy security and national interest. At the same time, last month President Putin had described India as a ‘great country’ and praised its independent foreign policy.
India’s policy regarding Iran also praised
Bartoshevsky also praised India’s stand regarding Iran. He said that India has supported reducing tension, dialogue and diplomatic solution. He told that Poland is also in contact with Iran and is also trying to find a solution through dialogue. According to him, the thinking of Poland and India in this matter is largely similar.

India’s support in the United Nations Security Council
Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister also reiterated his support for India’s demand for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). He said that India is a big and important country and it should be given a place commensurate with its role in global decision-making bodies.
