The central government is preparing to bring the women’s reservation and delimitation bill again in the monsoon session. The government is also discussing this matter with all political parties. Meanwhile, Supriya Sule’s hint on the delimitation bill has made the numbers game of Parliament more interesting. NCP may consider supporting Sharadchandra Pawar with the condition of increasing seats and discussing the limit of 50 percent reservation. The government also has its eyes on the MPs of JMM, AAP and NC, but the biggest key of this game is in the hands of DMK.
After the defection of TMC and Shiv Sena MPs in the Lok Sabha, the NDA now has 318 MPs. 360 votes are required for two-thirds majority. That means the government faces the challenge of garnering 42 additional votes. However, when the voting on the bill was held in the last session, YSRCP had voted in favor of the bill and after adding that, the requirement of 38 votes remains.
Lok Sabha numbers game
Total effective strength – 540, three seats are still vacant.
Two-thirds majority – 360
NDA currently has 322 votes.
Government needs 38 additional votes
Now the government is eyeing many MPs from the opposition camp. 37 MPs from Samajwadi Party, 4 MPs from RJD and 8 MPs from NCP Sharadchandra Pawar. According to sources, the government is also in touch with 3 MPs of JMM and 2 of NC. The numbers game in Parliament is such that every MP is being accounted for. Along with gathering support, the government is also working on the option of abstaining from voting.
8 MPs of Sharad Pawar’s party are a big factor in this whole mathematics. If there is agreement on the formula of increasing the seats by 50 percent in all the states, then the possibility of change in the stand of NCP Sharadchandra Pawar is not being ruled out. If 8 MPs join the government, then the number in support of the bill brought by the government will become 330. But still 30 votes will be required, which means the mathematics is still not complete. DMK FACTOR starts from here.
Lok Sabha- 22 MPs
Rajya Sabha- 8 MPs
Total- 30 MPs
DMK has 22 MPs in the Lok Sabha. If DMK votes in support of the government, the government’s tally will reach 352. That means just 8 votes away from the majority of 360. And if DMK abstains instead of supporting, then the number of MPs present in the House will decrease and the majority figure will also come down. Meaning whether DMK supports it or keeps distance, its decision is important in both the situations. That is why it is being said that the key to delimitation is still in the hands of DMK.
India upset over the death of Indians due to missile attack in Hormuz, now the government is going to take this big step
Government’s numbers game in Rajya Sabha
Two-thirds majority – 164
With government- 155
After Bengal by-election – 158
Need- support of 6 MPs
OR ABSTAIN 12 MPS
The government’s numbers game in Rajya Sabha appears to be easier than in Lok Sabha. After the by-elections on three seats in Bengal, the government’s strength will become 158. For two-thirds majority, the support of only 6 MPs will be required. DMK has 8 MPs in Rajya Sabha. Meaning here too whether DMK supports or abstains, the government’s work may become easier.
