Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Stephen Fleming have decided to part ways with mutual consent. With this, the 17-year tenure of Fleming, one of the most successful coaches in IPL history, ended. Now the franchise is busy searching for a new head coach. Meanwhile, India’s experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his opinion on this issue. He believes that CSK should now start a new era. However, he also said that if Mahendra Singh Dhoni is ready to take up the responsibility of coaching, then there will be no better option than him for the franchise.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin said, ‘The thinking of Stephen Fleming and Mahendra Singh Dhoni was very similar to each other. Fleming knew how Dhoni took decisions and Dhoni also understood how important a ally Fleming was for the team. The successful partnership of both lasted for a long time. Now Chennai Super Kings need to move towards the future.
He further said, ‘If Dhoni is ready to become the head coach, then there cannot be a better option than this for CSK. But if this does not happen, then the team will have to look for a coach who is capable of taking decisions on his own and taking responsibility for them.
Ashwin believes that whoever becomes the new head coach, the challenge before him will not be easy. The reason for this is that Mahendra Singh Dhoni is still one of the most influential faces of the team and his opinion remains important on many important decisions including team selection.
Ashwin said, ‘There will definitely be some uncertainties in front of the new coach in the beginning. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a very big name and even today he remains a part of many important discussions including team selection.

Stephen Fleming joined Chennai Super Kings as a player in the first season of IPL in 2008. After this, in 2009 he took over the post of head coach of the team. During his tenure, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. Apart from this, the team made it to the playoffs a record 12 times and played the IPL finals 10 times.
