IIT Madras Convocation: It is said that there is no age for learning and 45-year-old Jigisha Taylor, resident of Gujarat, has proved it to be true. In the recent convocation program held at IIT Madras, when Jigisha along with her 21-year-old son Aditya Kapadia came on stage to receive her degree, the moment became special for everyone. Mother and son completed their studies from the institute together, but this journey was not pre-decided. Jigisha’s studies, which started on the advice of her son, eventually brought both of them together to the stage of IIT.
Daughter’s advice changed mother’s life
Jigisha Taylor taught electronics for about 16 years in an engineering college located in Bharuch, Gujarat. In the year 2019, he had to leave his job due to family responsibilities. A few years later, his son Aditya told him about the online BS in Data Science and Applications program offered by IIT Madras and inspired him to take admission in it. Aditya had taken admission in this course in 2021, he chose this program since online studies started during the Covid-19 pandemic. Later, he left his other studies and focused completely on this degree.
It was not easy to study after a long gap
Jigisha took admission in this program in the end of 2022. Initially, it was difficult for him to study subjects like mathematics and statistics again, but within a few weeks he adapted himself to the new environment. With the help of live doubt classes, online sessions and the support of fellow students, he gradually progressed his studies. Instead of taking more subjects at once, he chose only one or two subjects in every semester, so that there is a balance between studies and home responsibilities. Jigisha’s daily routine was quite disciplined. She used to wake up around 4:30 in the morning to study, then handle household chores and complete study assignments again in the afternoon. Many people in the family also raised questions about his studying again at this age, but he did not stop learning.
Competition started between mother and son
Throughout this journey of Jigisha, her husband continuously encouraged her. Her mother-in-law and father-in-law also took interest in her studies and projects; whenever the pressure of studies increased, the family encouraged her to move ahead. The support of his family helped him achieve his target. With time, Jigisha and her son became not just mother and son but also study partners. A healthy competition started between the two to get good grades. Aditya was already doing the course, so he also helped Jigisha in preparing for the exam, project and viva. Jigisha’s good performance also inspired her son to do better.

The moment of convocation ceremony became memorable
Aditya first completed his BS degree and got a job in the field of data science. Jigisha also completed her studies, however for now she has decided to give time to her family before looking for a job. Apart from this, both of them were sitting in different sections in the convocation ceremony, but after knowing their story, the organizers called them together on the stage and awarded them the degree. This moment became very emotional and memorable for mother and son, both of them say that it was not just a journey of getting a degree but of learning from each other and moving forward together.
