MBBS Seats in India: The number of MBBS seats is most important for students who dream of studying medicine in the country. Recently, the National Medical Commission has released the official seat matrix of MBBS seats across the country for the educational level 2026-27 and this time a significant increase in the number of seats has also been seen. How many total seats did NMC increase?
According to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the National Medical Commission, this year admission will be given to a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats across the country. Of these, 1,27,028 seats were already approved, while this year 9,911 new seats have been approved. Apart from this, 25 new medical colleges have also been approved, in which about 2400 seats are also part of this increase. Now MBBS will be taught in a total of 823 medical colleges across the country.
Which state has maximum MBBS seats?
According to NMC data, Karnataka ranks first in terms of maximum MBBS seats. Maximum seats are available here in government and medical colleges together. After this comes Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Telangana. Due to the large number of medical colleges in these states, there are more opportunities for seats for students. Whereas among these states, maximum 1300 new MBBS seats have been added in Karnataka, due to which the total number of seats here increased to 15,395. With this, Karnataka once again became the country’s largest medical education hub and the state with the highest number of MBBS seats.

Seats increased so much in other states
After Karnataka comes Tamil Nadu, where after the addition of about 950 new seats, the total number of seats has increased to 13,999. Apart from this, about 900 seats have been added in Rajasthan, taking the total number of seats to 8,080. With the addition of about 825 new seats in West Bengal, the total number has reached 7,200, while in Telangana the total number has reached 10,250 with the addition of about 810 new seats. About 800 new seats have also been added in Uttar Pradesh, taking the total number of MBBS seats in the state to 14,000. Apart from this, a significant increase in seats has also been recorded in Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
Seats increased in both government and private colleges
This time the number of seats in both government and private medical colleges has been increased. Now a total of 63,996 seats will be available in 441 medical government medical colleges of the country, in which 2,111 new seats have been added this year. There will be a total of 73,643 seats in 382 private medical colleges. Among these, the maximum increase of 7,800 seats has been done this year.
