Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur recently created history by leading a historic Test win at Lord’s. Under his captaincy, Team India registered a memorable victory, but despite this success, former Indian captain Diana Edulji has started a debate by making a big statement. He believes that now separate captains should be appointed for different formats in the women’s team also.
What did Diana Edulji say on Harmanpreet’s captaincy?
At the unveiling ceremony of the Maharani T20 League, Diana Edulji said that the pressure of captaincy is affecting the personal performance of Harmanpreet Kaur. He said, ‘I think Harmanpreet is finding it difficult as a captain. Its effect is visible on his game also. He should get a chance to play freely only as a batsman. Earlier she was a great all-rounder, but now she has limited herself to batting only. Now the effect is visible on his batting also. I believe that now young players should be given the responsibility of captaincy.
Advocacy of split captaincy
Like men’s cricket, Diana Edulji also talked about appointing different captains for different formats in women’s cricket. He said, ‘I am in favor of split captaincy. Not only this, there should also be separate coaching staff for the three formats. Moving forward with new ideas and getting out of the comfort zone will be beneficial for the team.
Harmanpreet’s captaincy record
Harmanpreet Kaur is among the most successful captains of Indian women’s cricket. After Mithali Raj, she is the second player to captain India in more than 200 international matches. In T20 International, he captained India in 147 matches and led India to 89 wins, while the team lost 55 matches. In ODI, he captained in 51 matches, in which India won 30 matches and lost 19. Whereas in Test cricket, under his captaincy, the team has won 4 out of 5 matches.
