How much has changed in farming in 50 years?
If we look at the journey of the last 50 years, the method of farming has become completely modern and easy. Earlier the farmer was completely dependent on monsoon rains and wells. But now the network of canals, tube wells and drip irrigation have reduced the worry of irrigation considerably.
With the advent of hybrid seeds, better fertilizers and modern machines, crop production has increased manifold. Earlier only traditional crops like wheat and paddy were grown. Now farmers are rapidly moving towards polyhouse, horticulture and commercial farming. Today’s farmer watches the market prices from his mobile while sitting at home and decides the sowing time after knowing the weather conditions.

Are farmers still poor?
Due to increase in production and technology, the total income of farmers has definitely increased. But along with this the cost of farming has also increased manifold. The prices of seeds, fertilizers, diesel and labor have increased continuously, due to which the net profit did not increase at the pace that was expected. Due to small pieces of land, it still remains a challenge for small farmers to earn big profits.

However, those farmers who did not rely only on traditional grains and tried their luck in dairy farming, organic farming or cash crops, their income and standard of living have improved significantly. That means we can say that San has become more powerful than before. But it would not be correct to say that poverty of every farmer has gone away. Many farmers today are living a good life through farming. But many are still able to just survive.
