What is NTA and why is it so important?
National Testing Agency i.e. NTA is an autonomous body that conducts the main entrance examination of the country. It was established with the aim of developing a transparent, fair and technology-based examination system for admission to higher educational institutions. NTA conducts many national examinations for admission in medical, engineering and universities. These include examinations like NEET, UG, JEE Mains, CUET and UGC NET. Who is the current Chairman of NTA?
Presently retired Prof. Pradeep Kumar Joshi is the Chairman of NTA, he was given the responsibility of this post by the Ministry of Education in August 2023. Before Pradeep Kumar Joshi, he had been the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission. Apart from this, he has also held the post of Chairman of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission. Due to his long experience in the field of education and administration, he was given the responsibility of NTA. Pradeep Kumar Joshi is originally from Almora, Uttarakhand, while he studied in Kanpur. He started his career as a teacher and later worked on many senior positions in universities and different government institutions. After long experience in education administration, he became the Chairman of UPSC and then he was appointed Chairman of NTA in August 2023.

How is NTA Chairman appointed?
The Chairman of NTA is appointed by the Ministry of Education of the Government of India. Generally, a reputed expert in the education field or a senior administrator, who has experience of running a large institution, is appointed to this post. NTA is governed through a Governing Body, which is led by the Chairperson. The Director General is responsible for the day-to-day administrative and executive work of the agency. This post is usually given to a senior IAS officer.
How much salary does NTA get?
Recently, in response to a question asked under RTI, NTA said that the information about the salary and total salary expenditure of its senior officers is not available in the sought format. Therefore, the agency did not make public the complete details of the salaries of the remaining officers. However, according to the salary records available for August 2023, the monthly gross salary of the Director General of NTA at that time was approximately Rs 3.08 lakh. Whereas the monthly salary of senior NTA director was around Rs 3.35 lakh and the salary of director level officers was around Rs 2.18 lakh to Rs 2.27 lakh per month.
