US President Donald Trump has taken a big step amid Middle East tension. They have taken a big step against products related to forced labour. Trump has imposed an additional 10 percent tariff on goods imported from India. The important thing is that Trump has taken this decision against 17 countries including India. The US Trade Representative Office has taken this decision under Section 301.
America’s new tariff will come into effect from Friday (July 24). According to USTR, this action has been taken against those countries which did not take strict action on the import of products made with forced labour. The important thing is that Trump has kept India in the lower tariff slab, while 12.5 percent additional tariff has also been imposed on some countries. After Trump’s order, 60 trading partner countries were reviewed.
What did Donald Trump say about imposing tariffs?
According to PTI report, US Trade Representative Jameson Greer said that this step will begin to improve human rights violations and unfair trade practices. Trump said, ‘I have been advised by the Trade Representative that a tariff of 10 percent should be imposed on the goods of these economies (countries), so that they can be further encouraged to implement such sanctions effectively.’
Tariff imposed on which countries including India and Pakistan?
Along with India, America has also imposed 10 percent tariff on Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Argentina, Cambodia, Canada, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and Britain. Whereas 12.5 percent tariff has been imposed on many other countries.
Tariff on India was going to be 12.5 percent, then why was it reduced?
A US official said that 12.5 percent tariff was to be imposed on India, but on the basis of good negotiations on labor practice, 10 percent tariff has been imposed under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
