Abhijeet Dipke Typhoid: Typhoid cases start increasing rapidly during the rainy season. This is a disease which people often ignore considering it to be a normal fever, but if timely treatment is not received, it can take a serious form. Recently, Cockroach Janata Party founder and president Abhijeet Dipke shared a video on social media and said that he has been diagnosed with typhoid and is undergoing treatment.
He said that his blood report has confirmed typhoid and he is being given treatment through IV (intravenous) every morning and evening. In such a situation, let us know how typhoid spreads, what are its symptoms and when this disease becomes dangerous.
What is typhoid and how is it spread?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), typhoid is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria. This bacteria reaches the body by eating contaminated food and drinking dirty water. After entering the body, it starts spreading rapidly in the blood and increases the infection. Every year around 11 million to 21 million people around the world get infected with typhoid and about 2 lakh people die due to this disease. At the same time, about 50 lakh cases of paratyphoid are also reported every year, a large number of which are from South Asia.
What are the symptoms of typhoid?
The initial symptoms of typhoid usually appear 10 to 14 days after exposure to the bacteria. In this disease, the patient gradually starts having high fever. Apart from this, headache, fatigue, weakness, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea, muscle pain and rashes on the body may also occur. If not treated, this disease can persist for 3 to 4 weeks or more.
When does this disease become dangerous?
If timely treatment is not received, typhoid can take a serious form. According to experts, in different stages of the disease, the patient may suffer from serious problems like high fever, flatulence, rapid weight loss, dehydration, delirium, serious injury to the intestines, internal bleeding, swelling in the brain, kidney failure, pneumonia, swelling in the pancreas and meningitis. Therefore, if persistent high fever or other serious symptoms appear, a doctor should be contacted immediately.
Why is IV given in typhoid?
In severe cases of typhoid, there may be lack of water in the patient’s body. In such a situation, fluids and necessary medicines are given to the body through IV. Through IV, medicines reach the bloodstream directly, so their effect is quicker. For this reason, IV therapy is used in the treatment of many patients.

How is typhoid diagnosed?
If typhoid-like symptoms appear in a person, doctors recommend testing. For this, tests like blood test, blood culture, stool and urine test, Widal test and Typhi dot test can be done. In some severe cases, when there is no improvement even after antibiotics, bone marrow culture may also be advised.
How to prevent typhoid?
To avoid typhoid, it is important to drink clean and safe water, eat fresh and well-cooked food, wash hands with soap before eating and preparing food, avoid eating food available in the open on the roadside and maintain cleanliness around the house. Typhoid vaccine can also be administered on doctor’s advice before going to areas where typhoid cases are high.
