Spider Veins On Legs Causes And Symptoms: With increasing age, many changes start appearing in the body of parents. If very thin red, blue or purple colored veins have suddenly started appearing on your father’s legs, which look like spider webs or tree branches, then do not ignore them. In medical language this condition is called spider veins or telangiectasia. Usually spider veins are not dangerous in themselves, but in some cases they can be an early sign of a problem related to blood flow in the legs.
What are spider veins?
According to clevelandclinic, a health information website, spider veins appear due to damage to small blood vessels located just below the surface of the skin. Their color can be red, blue or purple. These often appear in a group of many thin lines at one place, due to which their shape looks like a spider web. Despite having ‘veins’ in the name, these are not normal veins. These are very small blood vessels connected to the veins and arteries of the body, which include capillaries, venules and arterioles. Spider veins can occur in different parts of the body, but they are more common on the legs, hands and face.

Is it dangerous to see spider webs on your feet?
In most cases, spider veins do not cause any serious harm to health. For many people it is only a problem related to the texture or appearance of the skin. However, in some cases, spider veins can be an early sign of chronic venous insufficiency or CVI. In this condition, the veins of the legs start having difficulty in sending blood back to the heart. If this problem increases with time, other problems may also arise. Therefore, if spider veins suddenly appear on the legs, it is better to inform the doctor about it, especially if other symptoms are also felt along with it.
These symptoms can be seen with spider veins
Having only spider veins usually does not cause pain or other symptoms. A person often comes to know about them only after looking at the feet. But if there are varicose veins or other problems with blood flow along with spider veins, then the problem may increase after standing for a long time. Such people may feel burning, cramps, itching and pain in the legs. Legs may feel heavy or tired. Bleeding can also occur if varicose veins present close to the skin burst. When such symptoms occur, treating visible spider veins alone is not sufficient. Doctors can treat the blood flow problem behind it.

Why do spider veins start forming?
Spider veins form when small blood vessels under the skin become weak and dilate. The exact reason why this happens is not known to every person. However, changes in hormones, some genetic disorders, diseases related to connective tissue and any kind of injury can be its reasons. Some people are more at risk. Sitting or standing in one place for a long time, having a family history of spider or varicose veins and obesity can increase the risk. Pregnancy, hormonal birth control, hormone therapy for menopause, prolonged sun exposure, and smoking also include risk factors.

When should one see a doctor?
If only thin spider veins are visible on your father’s leg and there is no other problem, then usually there is no need to panic. But it is important to pay immediate attention to some changes. If a visible blood vessel swells, changes color or feels hot and painful when touched, a doctor should be contacted. These may be signs related to blood clot. Similarly, the appearance of wounds, rashes or change in color on the skin of the feet, persistent burning sensation, pain or cramps can also indicate the need for medical examination.
